1 John 3:1-3
1How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.
The primary message: God Loves you!
John writes this message to the people of 1 John as a reminder to them what their identity is as Children of God, even though they themselves sometimes loose sight of that identity.
This passage is very much one of assurance of the identity of a follower of Jesus; it is, in a way, a reality check for those who are in danger of losing hope.
What is in store for the child of God whom He loves:
1. We are identified with Him (vs. 1), whether we believe it or not.
2. We will be like Him.
3. We will see Him. (vs. 2)
Conclusion (vs. 3) because we have this hope, we live in obedience to God.
